Living fully implies involvement with the world. When you actively do things, you experience self, your power, and your capacity. When you become intensely involved in a job, hobby, cause, or other person, you tend to lose self-consciousness, develop feelings of competence, and invest yourself in something “outside your own skin.” You have feelings of purpose and meaningfullness and may taste the satisfaction of what has been called “meaning fulfillment.” When you become absorbed in something outside yourself you begin to experience a kind of self-transcendence, accompanied by a feeling of well-being. Thus the experience of active involvement is a growth experience. We live life to gain happiness in what we want and need to do to keep us loving life. Being loved by another is the most profound validation of yourself; for to be loved means that someone knows you, that they accept the way you are, and that they value and prize you. To be loved, and therefore validated, is health-producing because it leads you to know, accept, and value yourself. And if you can do this, you are better able to function in life and more likely to experience a continual feeling of well-being. The ability to love depends upon the extent to which you value yourself, have faith in your own powers, and don’t be afraid of giving yourself. Love is everywhere, just waiting for you to capture it.
